“Stiffness in the legs and lower body will cause your head to sway laterally or raise up and down. To maintain a steady head positions that is vital, turn your right side freely out of the way on the backswing and keep your legs flexed and moving toward the target on the downswing.”

“The correct grip must be compact and firm without introducing the least amount of rigidity in any part of the body. The left hand, well on top of the shaft, holds firmly; the right delicately, wit a slight ‘pitch’ in the hold of the right thumb and index finger.”

Here’s an easy way to figure out how far you should stand from the ball with each club. While standing erect, extend the club waist-high horizontally in front of you. Now bend from the hips until your club rests on the ground. The club will now be resting the proper distance from your body.

When chipping downhill or from a lie that will make it difficult to stop the ball at the hole, always leave the flagstick in the hole, as it will act as a backstop. Leaving the flag in also improves your depth perception for the position of the hole.

“Trying to keep the right elbow close to the body on the backswing hinders the maximum upper-body coiling needed to achieve power without relying on the hands and wrists. Instead, keep the right arm relaxed and passive and let it follow your shoulder turn.”

If you struggle to stay in balance during your swing, you’re probably swinging too fast. Pretend a photographer is going to take a picture of your finish. As you swing, hold your finish position for three seconds. If you can’t do this, slow down your tempo and repeat until you find a speed that lets you hold that pose.

Instructors often say students are paralyzed by over-analysis. If you find yourself getting too wrapped up in your swing mechanics, try instead to focus on taking a divot. If you’re thinking about taking a divot, you’re thinking about your impact and you’ve got your mind off your swing position.

To develop proper left arm rotation on the forward swing, which will help get rid of a slice, practice hitting shots with a headcover placed under your left armpit. If you can hit shots without the headcover falling to the ground, you are keeping the left arm and left side properly connected.

A full turn is a main ingredient to a swing that approaches the ball on an inside path, and an inside-to-square clubhead path is the key to getting rid of a slice. You have made a full turn when your left shoulder is behind the ball at the top of the backswing.
